George Delaney passed away at Victoria Home in Ossining, N.Y. on November 8 2016,after a long illness.
George was born in N.Y.C. on February 18,1936, the son of Margaret & John Delaney. He had eight children, six grandchildren, two nephews and a niece. He also had a health care aide who helped him greatly during his illness.
He was a scholarship graduate of Manhattan College and earned a Masters of Business Administration degree from New York University. He also received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Mercy College.
George was Vice President of Con Edison for 28 years, the last 19 years in charge of Westchester Operations. In 1979, he led the defeat of an attempt by County government to takeover Con Edison’s operations in Westchester County with a decisive popular vote. Delaney’s 19 year tenure in Westchester was noted by a period of stable rates and an emphasis on outstanding customer service.
He served on the boards of many not for profits and also served as chairman of the Westchester County Association.
George was honored by President Ronald Reagan and Governor Mario Cuomo, as well as the Vietnam Veterans Association, the 52 Association, the Conferences of Christians and Jews, and the Diabetes Association.
In 1993, the Gannett Newspaper selected him as the outstanding business leader in Westchester.
Active in political affairs as a young man, he was elected the Republican district leader in the Northwest Bronx. He was active in the campaigns of Richard Nixon, Nelson Rockefeller, Malcolm Wilson, John Lindsey, and John McCain. He was also a U.S. Armey veteran.
George was a friend to all and will be missed by his friends and family.
Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday November 14th from 7 – 9 PM. Mass of Christian burial will be on Tuesday November 15th , 10:30 AM at St. Theresa Church in Briarcliff. Burial to follow at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
