June 7, 1926 ~ April 6, 2015 (age 88) 88 Years Old


Janet M. Duncan died unexpectedly at Phelps Memorial Hospital on April 6, 2015. Janet was born on June 7, 1926 in Philadelphia to Drs. Henry Matez and Dorothy Livingstone Matez, growing up in the Throgs Neck area of the Bronx. On June 22, 1946 in the Cornell Chapel in Ithaca, NY, she married the love of her life, Dr. James A. Duncan Jr. who predeceased her in 2002. She graduated from Cornell University in 1946 and received her Master's degree from Manhattanville College.
   She is  survived by her children, Dorothy F. Duncan of Mount Vernon, NY, and Dr. James A. Duncan III and his wife Dr. Paula Duncan of Essex Junction, VT; three grandchildren, Rebecca Belford and her partner, Tom Stoll, of Buffalo, NY; James A. Duncan IV, his wife Laura Dlugolecki and their daughters Louisa and Susanna of Winooski, VT; Dr. Elizabeth D. Duncan and her husband Dr. Adam C. Ulano and their son, Charlie, of Watertown, MA; her niece and nephews, Donna, David, and Ricky and their families; and her brother-in-law Richard Duncan and his wife Pat. She was happy and proud that her children and grandchildren have chosen to continue the family traditions of music, medicine and love of nature.
  She was a teaching assistant in the Ossining Public Schools until 2014, where she enjoyed mentoring children as well as the friendship and camaraderie of her colleagues. A lifelong lover of the performing arts and a clarinetist, she was a founding member of the Westchester Symphonic Winds, with whom she performed as recently as their last concert. She also enjoyed needle crafts, her knitting circle friends, and quilting for family members.
   A funeral service will be held at the Waterbury and Kelly Funeral Home,1300 Pleasantville Road, Briarcliff Manor, on Saturday April 11. The family will be welcoming friends from 3-5, with the service at 3:30.

   If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Janet Duncan to the Westchester Symphonic Winds, 333 Mamaroneck Ave., Box 485, White Plains NY 10605.
