Malvin ‘Mal’ Nechis, 87, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on January 31, 2023. He was born in Mount Vernon, NY to the late Benjamin and Sylvia Nechis. Mal graduated from Horace Mann High School. Before earning a bachelor’s degree from Alfred University, he served his country in the United States Army. He then earned an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School (‘61). Mal was a strategist at IBM for several decades, marrying technology with higher education. Mal lived life to the fullest and enjoyed sailing, tennis, woodworking and nature walks. In retirement he dedicated himself to volunteering for his community. He launched a foreign policy discussion group at the Chappaqua Library, was a board member of Neighbors Link and Ossining Open Door and was an avid supporter of the Ossining Children’s Center. Mal is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Lucille ‘Joan’ Nechis; his sons Barry (Alex) and Steven, and his daughter Sharon Castillo (Erik Currin); stepchildren Bill Karbon (Melanie), Michael Karbon (Janine), Lynn Watson (Stephen), Kathy Fraher, Meg Nachman (Eric) and 12 grandchildren: Gabriela, Alessandra, Sydney, Mackenzie, Chase, Kellsey, Riley, Courtney, Tyler, Caroline, Lauren, and Marlow. He is predeceased by his sister Ruth Neiberg.
A Celebration of Life open house will be held on February 10, 2023 3pm to 5pm at 1 Harbor Square, Club Lounge, Ossining, NY. A donation in Mal’s memory may be made to Neighbors Link, Ossining Open Door or Ossining Children’s Center.
