Jacqueline C. Carlson died peacefully on January 2, 2021. She was born in Spring Lake, New Jersey on December 16, 1930 to James and Ethel Coburn, who were Salvation Army officers. Jacqueline’s life was centered on the motto of the Salvation Army, taught to her by her parents. “Doing the Most Good,” was a theme that transcended into her daily living. She grew up in the tri state area, graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology and worked at Joseph Horne in Pittsburgh. In 1953, she married Theodore J. Carlson.
Together, they raised their children in Rockville Centre, New York. She was active in the Salvation Army Corp in Hempstead, Long Island, participating in the Woman’s League, songsters and taught Sunday school. In 1969, she moved with her family to Briarcliff Manor, New York. She spent time worshipping at the Faith Lutheran Brethren Church, serving on committees while also being involved in the college life at The King’s College. She served on the Salvation Army Board for the greater New York area and in 2015, she moved to the Atria on the Hudson in Ossining, New York. In 2018, she began to serve as a Resident Council Member at the Atria.
Jacqueline was fortunate to enjoy her summers on the Jersey shore with her family. She loved teaching her children and grandchildren how to sew, knit and crochet. She loved reading and spending time at the beach with her family. She was known for her gorgeous knitted sweaters which she made for various friends, family and even the pets she adored. She will always be remembered for her grace, style, and sense of humor, wit and beauty.
Jacqueline is survived by her 4 children and their spouses, 9 grandchildren, one great grandchild plus several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, brother and loving husband.
Private services will be held at the Waterbury and Kelly funeral home in Briarcliff, followed by interment at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla. A memorial service to honor Jackie’s memory will be held at a later date.
