Bruce Matthews Obituary

Bruce Morgan Matthews passed away on January 30, 2021, at The Club at Briarcliff Manor, following a good fight against Alzheimer’s Disease and complications from Covid:19.

Bruce was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey to Walter and Dorothy (Williams) Matthews. He grew up and lived in Briarcliff Manor until he entered Bucknell University. Upon graduation in 1964, he joined the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant in the Special Forces Group (Green Berets). After spending a year in Vietnam, he returned to the U.S., was promoted to Captain and left the Army in 1967.

As a civilian, he worked both client and agency sides in the advertising business in New York and Boston. He also worked on the “other side “of the camera as a model and actor, including Paul Newman’s stand-in for “The Verdict.” After his retirement, he wrote a book about his Vietnam experience, called “Short Round and Other Stories from Vietnam.” He was also active in improv groups, museums, photography and served on the Board of Directors of his Co-Op.

In 1987, he met his life partner, Joanne Davis, and embarked on many adventures spanning the globe and more than 70 countries together.

In addition to Joanne, he is survived by his much loved children Gregory (Yvonne) Matthews and Laurie Matthews and grandchildren Gregory Matthews, Scott Matthews, Zander Buswinka, Leila Buswinka, Ashlie Jensen, Bob Matthews and Mark Matthews, sister-in-law, Clare Davis, mother-in-law Ann Davis and many friends and honorary nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, Bruce would appreciate a contribution to what always made him happy. The family is naming a tree at The Museum of Modern Art (Bruce’s favorite museum) in tribute to Bruce. If you’d like to join us, please send a check to: The Museum of Modern Art, note on the check: “Bruce Matthews tree“: Museum of Modern Art, 11 West 53rd Street, NY, NY 10019, Attention: Arianna Mastro, Development Office.
