On Wednesday, March 22, 2023, Heaven gained another angel with the passing of Regina Clara Pohar, who passed peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. At age 97, Regina lived a full and gracious life. Born on August 12, 1925, in Mt. Carmel, Pennsylvania to John and Cecelia Leczinski, Regina was the last surviving sister to her 7 siblings (Anna, Cecelia, Walter, Jack, Marie, Eleanor, and Edward “Sonny”).
Regina lived most of her life in Yonkers, NY where she and her son, Mark, shared a conjoining home with her sister, Eleanor, and her husband, George. This is where many exciting games of poker were played on Friday nights and church bingo played on Sundays. Regina was a faithful parishioner of Sacred Heart Church where she also worked for many years at the catholic school in the cafeteria. Additionally, she was a valued member of the team at St. John’s Riverside Hospital where she worked in various roles, and eventually retired as a pharmacy technician.
Regina was a devoted mother and grandmother who took an active role in the lives of her grandchildren and always made sure her family was fed and had freshly ironed clothes to wear.
A lover of travel and adventure, Regina took memorable vacations with her family to California, Hawaii, Ocean City Maryland, and cruises to countless destinations where she always roomed with her favorite travel partner, her grandson.
Regina and Eleanor later shared a residence in Briarcliff Manor after moving there to be closer to family. Although the two fought like a married couple, they were thick as thieves and each other’s best friends. During her time in Briarcliff, Regina enjoyed weekday luncheons at Squire’s restaurant with her friends Mickey, Gloria, Betty, Maureen, Bridget, and Gayle. After Eleanor’s passing and in Regina’s later years, she was blessed to be compassionately cared for by Sherron Gordon.
Regina leaves behind her only son and the light of her life, Mark, and his wife, Kerry, their three children, Shannon and her husband Brian, Sara and her husband Randy, and her grandson Sean, as well as three great-grandchildren, Avery, Dylan, and Ryan, who were blessed to have known her. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Evelyn, her nieces Joyce and Denise and their families, and many other nieces and nephews, as well as the children and grandchildren of Cornelius and Maureen Sullivan and their families. Regina was a selfless and thoughtful soul who will be missed and remembered by the many lives she touched.
Services will be held at Waterbury and Kelly Funeral Home in Briarcliff Manor on Sunday, March 26, 2023, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by a funeral mass at St. Theresa’s Church at 10 a.m. on Monday March 27, 2023, that will be presided over by Father Robert Abbatiello, who has known Regina since he was a young child and remains to be the closest of friends with Regina’s son Mark. The Pohar family wishes to thank all those sending their kind thoughts and prayers for the life of beloved Regina.
