Mary Lou Morrissy Obituary

Our beloved Mary Lou (nee Gentle) Morrissy of Ossining, NY, exited this life peacefully, in her own residence, on December 22, 2023.  Her inner and outer beauty, charm, wit and spiritual graces will be sorely missed by her bereaved family and friends.  She was 89 at the time of her passing.

Mary Lou was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in May of 1934, and grew up in River Forest, Illinois where she met her future husband, Jerome Phillip Morrissy, while just in grade school.  Heartbroken when he joined a Dominican seminary, he later terminated his novitiate program, and came home to River Forest.  Mary Lou then married the love of her life in 1956.  She was educated at Sacred Heart Barat College in Lake Forest, Illinois, in the mid-50’s as a Drama major, and received her Master’s degree in Education at Manhattanville College.  She and Jerry moved to the New York suburbs in the early 60’s and raised their children in Briarcliff Manor where they lived for 50 years.  She and Jerry downsized from their home in 2015, to an apartment residence in Ossining, NY in 2015.

Mary Lou was pre-deceased by Jerome in 2017, and had 2 pre-deceased children; Billy Morrissy (1969- 1974) and Cynthia Marie (1959-2007).  Her surviving children are Mary Claire Kurtz, Jennifer Morrissy, Thomas Morrissy and Patricia Morrissy Sperber.  She is also survived by her daughter in law, Trisha Morrissy and son-in-law, Jeff Sperber, her 7 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; Stephen Kurtz, (wife Julie, children; Jameson and Hudson), Matthew Kurtz, Emmett, William, Kelly, and Kevin Morrissy, and Josef Sperber.  She is also survived by her loyal and beloved sister, Carolyn O’Leary, of River Forest, IL, and many dear nieces and nephews on both the Morrissy and Gentle sides.  She is pre-deceased by her parents, Archibald and Mary Gentle, and her other siblings; Colleen Kern, Patricia Donohue and William Gentle.

While her family was the center of her life, she enjoyed a long teaching career and her many friends.  She was a well-loved and highly respected English teacher at Ossining High School for 28 years, and for part of that time, a Union Leader, until her retirement in 1993.  Soon after, she was invited by Marge Griesmer of the Open Door Clinic, to write a grant to create an after-school and summer program for local middle-school aged children.  She ran this program on a volunteer basis for 8 years.  Many of her contemporaries offered their time to tutor at the program, which was housed and supported at the Open Door Clinic.  This strong community-minded program gave many children the gift to remain successfully engaged in their schooling.  She and Jerry were involved in many local charities, notably, The Ossining Children’s Center.

Mary Lou was an important influence to many working women, especially her daughters - working full-time while raising six children, two with special needs.  She gave to motherhood in the spirit of great grace, faith, sacrifice and determination.  Her strength and resiliency in this regard was remarkable.  She was an early adopter of Feminist principles which, combined with her deep Catholic faith, made her a profoundly modern and inspirational role model to all who knew her.

Reposing, Waterbury & Kelly Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4-8 PM. Funeral Mass, St. Augustine Church, Ossining, NY on Thursday 10 AM. Interment, St. Augustine Cemetery, Ossining, NY to follow. She wrote this prayer for her family which we want to share with all who read this:

Mom’s Prayer

Oh God of Power and Might,

Keep my family safe and bright.

Free from sin and pain and sorrow,

Help them face each new tomorrow.

Holy Spirit, Father, Son

Help them see You in everyone.

Bless them Father with your grace,

And stir the fire of their faith.
