We are sorry to announce that Andrew William Saunders passed away on June 10th, 2023.
Andrew was born on May 27th, 1951 in Van Nuys, California, and was raised by his parents, Robert and Barbara, in Southern California.
He went to the University of Denver on a full athletic scholarship for gymnastics from 1969 to 1973. In 1973, he was ranked sixth in the country by the NCAA for the high bar. His lifelong love of monkeys was undoubtedly related to his ability to swing like Tarzan. At the University of Denver, he met Sharon Comfort, and they married on August 26th 1972.
After graduating from university, the newlyweds moved to New York where Andrew joined George Comfort and Sons, a real estate management firm, where he worked for twenty years. In 1993, he struck out on his own and pursued a variety of residential real estate ventures, and also owned Armonk tennis club for a decade. He eventually took early retirement in order to pursue his passion for furniture restoration. In the 1990s, Andrew became catholic, and has devoted much of his energy to supporting local churches in numerous ways.
Andrew and Sharon built their life together in Briarcliff Manor, NY, where they raised three children. Andrew was passionate about sports – tennis and skiing in his prime, and fly fishing later in life. He summitted Mount Kilimanjaro in 1997 together with his two daughters. He was also an animal lover, always with a dog in his company, and chickens to tend to.
Andrew has been a member of Sleepy Hollow Country Club since 1974. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; his mother, Barbara; his sister, Pam; his three children, Drew, Lucinda and Lee; and his six grandchildren. There will be a wake from 4 to 7 pm at Waterbury & Kelly Funeral Home, in Briarcliff Manor on Thursday, June 15th, and the funeral service will be at Saint Augustin’s church, route 9, Ossining, on Friday, June 16th at 11 am.
