Obituary

Ruth A. Michaels, of Ossining, NY, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 29, 2025 at the age of 86 after an extended illness. In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her sister, Violet Terwilliger.

Ruth is survived by her niece, Lynn Terwilliger Northrup (Peter) of Charlotte, NC; nephew, Jeffrey Terwilliger (Charlotte) of Raleigh, NC; and a close-knit circle of longtime friends.

A graduate of Yonkers High School in 1957 and the Cochran School of Nursing in 1960, Ruth went on to further her education, earning Bachelors and Masters degrees. She began her career at St. John Riverside Hospital before moving on to Phelps Memorial Hospital, where she worked until her retirement. As Director of the O.R. (Surgical Services) and later, as Director of Quality Assistance/Risk Management, Ruth gained a reputation for being tough but fair and became a strong advocate for nurses. Her dedication to her job, knowledge, compassion, keen wit, and intelligence earned her the respect and praise of many.

A lifelong New Yorker, Ruth enjoyed traveling with friends and always had a funny story to tell. She cherished her friendships and kept her friends close. Her retirement party was attended by many people with whom she'd worked over the years. To the surprise and delight of many, Ruth arrived at her party on the back of a motorcycle--clad in leather boots, vest, and helmet--operated by a good friend who also happened to be a surgeon.

Ruth lived a remarkable life and leaves behind a lasting legacy of strength, integrity, and generosity. She will be missed by many.

Her loved ones wish to thank Phelps Memorial Hospital and Calvary Hospital for their compassionate care.
