Obituary

Patricia Marshall (nee Begg) was born August 28, 1935 in the Bronx, the only child of Mary McGee Begg and Patrick Joseph Begg.  A proud Bronx girl, she spent her childhood years in the south Bronx, opposite St. Mary's Park.  She commuted to Cathedral High School (class of 1953). At 18 she attended Bellvue School of Nursing, jumping into combat as a student nurse in a public hospital.  Among the lessons she learned were 1) Never question the doctor and 2) Die the alcohol blue so the patients wouldn't drink it.  Patricia was a trailblazer, attending Hunter College for a Bachelors in Infectious Diseases, at a time when a college degree wasn't required for a nurse's license.  She remained an active Bellvue alumni all her life, and kept in touch with friends she made there.

Patricia met Bernard J. Marshall at her cousin's wedding, and married him on May 7th, 1960.  They lived in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx, parishioners of Our Lady of Angels.  She was blessed with Irish triplets, having three daughters between June 1963 and May 1966.  After her youngest began school, Patrica worked for the City Department of Health.

Relocating to Rockaway Township in Morris County, NJ in 1974, she learned to drive in her forties.  Patricia worked for the American Red Cross and the Visiting Nurse Association, eventually becoming the Director of Nursing for the town of Parsippany.  She frequently taught classes on child care, CPR and other community health topics.  If you were in Morris county in the 1980s or 90s, you may have received your flu vaccine from her.

Upon retirement in 2003, Patricia moved to Briarcliff Manor, NY to be near her daughters and grandchildren.   She had fond memories of living at North Hill Apartments and the community they formed.  She became known to her grandchildren's friends as "Pat the Magic Granma", quick with the junk food.  A devout Catholic,  Patricia was a member of St. Theresa's Parish.  She was frequently seen at the Saturday afternoon masses, always 4th row on left.

In the 70's she wore a lot of pantsuits, later her entire wardrobe was navy blue. But pink was her choice for special occasions.  When her young children asked her a question, a response of "I'll think about it" meant "No".  Putting your hair in curlers was her answer to most of life's challenges. At the top of her Christmas list every year was "Peace and quiet".  She was fond of telling stories of her childhood, extended family, and Irish heritage. Those close to her were aware that when she uttered "Interestingly enough…" you were in for a long yarn.  In her youth, her biggest trip was to California, where she toured the sites in skirts and heels.  She never left the country until 1993, but then made up for it with trips to England, Ireland, Wales, Italy, Russia, Morocco, Monaco, Australia and New Zealand, mostly wearing sneakers.  She was a great holiday hostess, with the trademark of always forgetting one item until mid-meal.   In the 21st century she discovered Mexican food, and regaled us with her unique pronunciations.  (Guacamole rhymes with Whack-A-Mole).

Because of failing health, she moved to the Nathaniel Witherell Home in Greenwich Connecticut in 2021, where she passed away peacefully on April 27th, 2024.

As Patricia looked back on her life, she found joy in the success of her children and grandchildren.  She is survived by her three daughters, Aileen Marshall, Nancy Stanton (Michael) and Jean Claire Glanville (Chip), along with 5 grandchildren: Erin Stanton, Molly Eustis (Lee), Sean Glanville, Danielle Glanville and Caroline Stanton.  She'll be remembered as a wonderful mother, a shining example of a modern, independent woman who dealt with adversity head-on. We are grateful she was in our lives, and hope we perpetuate her faith and strength.

A viewing will be held at Waterbury & Kelly in Briarcliff Manor, NY on Thursday, May 2nd from 4pm until 8pm.  A funeral mass is scheduled on Friday, May 3rd 10 AM at St. Theresa's in Briarcliff Manor, with burial at Gate of Heaven to follow.
