Obituary

Mildred Lorres DeFelice passed away early in the morning on February 1, 2015 at age 90, while resting peacefully in Chatham, New Jersey.  Mildred is survived by her three children, Paula DeFelice, Laura DeFelice and Michael DeFelice, and five grandchildren, Danika Paulo, Gus Capatides, Michael DeFelice, Gabriela DeFelice and Max Capatides. Mildred lived a full and happy life.  Born in New York City on August 18, 1924, she grew up during the Great Depression in an immigrant household full of hope for the future.  Mildred was always an avid reader, especially mystery books, so it is no surprise that she became a librarian, first at the New York Public Library and then for the Ossining, New York school system.  She was raised in a family that emphasized education, acceptance of others, appreciation of art and music and love of family.  She married Nicolo DeFelice in 1952 and together they passed these values on to their three children.  Both Mildred and Nick worked hard to provide a good life for their family, but always found time to enjoy socializing with friends, patronizing the arts and travelling when possible.  When Mildred retired from teaching, she spent 17 years in Del Ray Beach, Florida where she made many friends and enjoyed life further.

If she were able, Mildred would say she was very blessed in her lifetime.  She has left her family to carry on her spirit.  And she would probably quote one of her favorite authors in saying, "The powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse."  Leaves of Grass, by Walt Whitman.     A memorial service will take place at Waterbury & Kelly Funeral Home, 1300 Pleasantville Road, Briarcliff Manor, New York beginning at 9:30 am on Saturday, February 7th.  Memorial donations are being accepted on Mildred's behalf by the Alzheimer's Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC  20090-6011.
