(O’Rourke) Eckel

Mary M. (O'Rourke) Eckel, 89, of Chatham, NY, formerly of Stuyvesant, NY, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2025, at Waterbury Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on August 2, 1935, in Waterbury, CT, Mary graduated from high school before beginning her career with the telephone company. One of her fondest memories was working as a "soda jerk" during high school, a role that perfectly complemented her vibrant personality and kindhearted nature. Later, she dedicated over 30 years of service as Head Cook for the Ichabod Crane School District, during this time she was a Union representative. She was a familiar and welcoming presence to both students, staff and food vendors alike.
Mary was deeply devoted to her community, volunteering extensively at St. Paul's Church in Kinderhook for over 40 years. Serving on several committees and the alter guild. She was a fixture of the 8:00 AM service, always seated near the entrance to greet fellow parishioners with warmth and kindness. After Mass, she could often be found at the Elks Lodge, enjoying breakfast with friends.
She was also an active member of The Eastern Star since 1990. She served as Matron for a year and was always eager to give back to those in need as an active hardworking member.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, Walter S. Eckel, father Alfed O'Rourke, Mother Margret O'Rourke and brother Alfred P. O'Rourke. She is survived by her son, Michael J. Cartwright, and daughter-in-law, Andrea Cartwright; her granddaughters, Jessica Cartwright, Jennifer Cartwright, and Sarah Cartwright, and Partner Russell Harrigan, whose kindness and generosity to the family will never be forgotten.
Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who touched the lives of many, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. A funeral service will be held at St. Paul's Church, 6 Sylvester St., Kinderhook, NY 12106, on April 26th at 11:00 AM, followed by a small reception in the McNary Center.
