Margaret H.
Powers
May 7, 1933 — Sep 8, 2026
Sleepy Hollow, NY
Margaret H. Powers passed away on Tuesday September 8, 2026 at Kendal-on-Hudson in Sleepy Hollow, NY, at the age of 93.
Margaret was born in New Rochelle Hospital on May 7, 1933 and spent her earliest years in Pelham and Scarsdale, NY. Margaret attended Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Scarsdale and remembered walking down the middle of the Post Road during World War II when gasoline rationing rendered now busy roads wide thoroughfares more frequently used by walkers and bicyclists than cars. At the end WWII, she moved with her family to White Plains and attended St. John the Evangelist School and White Plains High School. She graduated from the College of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, NJ with a Bachelor's of Science in Business Administration in 1955. Somewhat dejected by the limited opportunities offered to women in corporate America, she accepted a position as an executive assistant in the corporate offices of Standard Oil. By virtue of her diligence and hard work, she was promoted to a professional position in Investor Relations at Standard Oil.
Margaret was a favorite of her mother-in-law who was also a graduate of St. Elizabeth College and met Margaret at a Westchester alumni event. Her then future mother-in-law urged her son, Bill, to ask Margaret on a date. Margaret and Bill wed in October 1959 and welcomed Will, the first of their six children in August 1960 to their home in Hastings-on-Hudson. Three more children later, Margaret and Bill realized their dream to move to their own home on Radnor Avenue in Croton-on-Hudson on September 9, 1966. As Margaret's family grew from 6 to 8, they chose to stay in Croton and moved to a bigger house on Lexington Drive where she lived until 1999. Margaret was a master gardener who transformed an overgrown yard into a lush green hillside lawn and garden. In 1999, she downsized to a home in Scarborough, NY which allowed her to sneak in more games of tennis and golf----quite possibly the decisive factor in scoring a hole-in-one at Sleepy Hollow Country Club where she was a longtime member.
Margaret was a faith-filled Catholic who lived her Christian values every day. Despite the devastating loss of her beloved husband in 2004, Margaret continued to live life to the fullest enjoying her growing clan of grandchildren and a wide array of friends and neighbors who always included her as an A-lister on invitations for dinners, parties and golf games. She was a founding member of the "Old Bats Club" who spent hot summer afternoons under a shade tree by the SHCC pool. In 2019, Margaret downsized once more by pulling up stakes and moving down the road to Kendal-on-Hudson where she spent the last 7
years of her life. She was always impressed by the positive attitude and warmth of the Kendal residents and staff.
Margaret checked all the boxes for a great life. She understood that the real joy and excitement of life is the dreaming and planning, like the Christmas season, not the holiday itself. She adored her parents and her siblings, she married a man with whom she shared a lifelong best friendship, she cherished her kids, their spouses and her grandchildren, and she enjoyed a wide circle of friends she made and met everywhere. She was the eternal optimist who was tickled pink with her life and growing family, especially as it unfolded in her little village of Croton. She had a hard time sitting still. She walked 5 miles a day and sat down only to plow through one of the thousands of books that she borrowed from her beloved Croton Free Library. As her nest emptied, Margaret filled in the time in sundry ways, including serving as the Village's Canine Enumerator, leading the Village's initiative to sign up residents for Section 8 housing assistance, and pitching in alongside her old buddies at Swanson's Florist during the busy spring season. She was kind and willing to help someone in need, even after the time she spent a long afternoon with an elderly gentleman to whom she offered a ride home and who could not remember where he lived after he climbed in the car. She was thrilled to travel, see Broadway shows, walk the Aqueduct Trail with swinging arms and explore new roads to which she had never been down.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband, William T. Powers, Jr., her parents, William C. Henchy and Mary (Burns) Henchy, and her 5 siblings. She is also survived by her 6 children and their spouses, William T. Powers (Jeanette), John J. Powers (Mary Beth), Mary P. Gallivan (Andrew), Thomas F.X. Powers (Julia), Anita C. Powers, Paul A. Powers (Danielle), 21 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday September 12 at 10am at Holy Name of Mary Church in Croton-on-Hudson, NY. A burial at Bethel Cemetery in Croton-on-Hudson will follow the service. A lunch celebrating Margaret's life will take place immediately after the burial at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Scarborough, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Francis Bread for the Poor, Inc. or Luv Michael Homes.
