Jane Paul Franck, 91, passed away peacefully at her home in Ossining, N.Y. on May 14, 2012. The daughter of the late Francis and Irene A. Neumann Paul, she was born on January 11, 1921 in Akron, Ohio.
Jane earned her B.A. cum laude from Hofstra University in 1942, B.S., Library Service, from Columbia University in 1943, M.A. with honors from Columbia University in 1949 and did course work for her Ph.D. at City College from 1968-1974. She was also a William Mason Scholar at Columbia University from 1947-1948.
She was the Director of the Milbank Memorial Library of Teachers College, Columbia University from 1977-2001. In addition, she was the Librarian and Administrative Officer for the Ford Foundation from 1968-1977, and Archivist and Special Collections Librarian at City College from 1960-1966 where she was also the Editor of the Library's journal "Circum-Spice" from 1965-1968. Jane devoted her life to library service and libraries serving as a consultant for libraries here in the United States, as well as those in Singapore, Iran, Spain and Pakistan. Most notably, she worked as a consultant for the library for the new Asia Society building in New York in 1975-1978 and the Mellon Foundation Library in New York in 1972 and served as an instructor at the Agnelli Foundation Library in Turin, Italy in 1971. She was also the consulting archivist for the New York Philarmonic from 1965- 1976.
Jane is survived by her loving daughter Irene and was predeceased by her husband Wolf Franck and her daughter Julie Franck. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 1, 2012 at 11 AM at the Briarcliff Congregational Church, 30 South State Road, Briarcliff Manor, NY 10510.
