IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James 'Dutch'
Walter Uyterlinde
September 30, 1980 – September 22, 2024
James Uyterlinde, affectionately known as "Dutch," passed away peacefully on September 22nd, 2024, after a courageous battle with illness. A lover of all forms of art—drawing, painting, music, and film—James had an extraordinary ability to bring his creative visions to life, even with a simple napkin sketch. His attention to detail and artistic precision were a perfect fit for his 20+ year career as a stagehand at the Metropolitan Opera, a place that felt like an extended family to him. Born in New York City as one of three triplet brothers, James practically grew up in the Opera house alongside his siblings who all performed in the children's chorus and as supernumeraries. Their father, who ushered at the Met, proudly watched as his children thrived in the arts. The Opera was always close to James' heart, shaping his life both personally and professionally. Nicknamed "Dutch" by his crew due to his Dutch heritage and time spent working in Amsterdam, James honed practical skills like carpentry and problem-solving. His calm, collaborative approach made him a trusted leader on the Service Crew, where he always focused on the group's success rather than personal recognition. He loved his work, building and repairing scenery while intuitively moving in sync with the music. His natural leadership, humility, and dependability earned him the respect of his colleagues and bosses, who valued his contributions both on stage and behind the scenes. He was predeceased by his father, Walter and is survived by his mother, Katherine, his elder brother Arie, surviving triplets Andrew and Eugene, his sister-in-law, Michelle, and his nephews Schuyler and Scott. Though his life was cut short, James' spirit, kindness, and artistry left a lasting mark on all who knew him. We will forever cherish the memories of his talent, his warmth, his humor, and his unwavering love for the arts.
