Obituary

Always a "Life Celebrant," Jim Casey left us on Monday, October 6, following a heart attack. A proud Brooklynite, one of the Flatbush boys, he grew up in a large, loving Irish family, one of six children, the oldest boy. A devout Catholic, he attended St. Joseph's College in New Jersey, and later earned a Masters in Business Administration from Columbia University.

He began his career working traveling the globe as a salesman for Exxon. He next joined First Mississippi Corporation, and moved to Mississippi, then to their New York office as a vice-president. He then was offered a job at Gould Investors, LP, an REIT corporation where he did title insurance. Jim went on to form his own title company, Majestic Abstract Corporation. He did not retire until he was eighty.

A natural athlete, Jim excelled in basketball and swimming as a young man. He

was a lifeguard at Rockaway Beach as a teenager. He loved skiing the mountains of Europe with his friends—and sailing in the Hamptons, where he weas a member of the Sandbar Club.  He later joined Larchmont Yacht Club. When he and Barbara started dating, he became a devotee of golf and joined Sleepy Hollow Country Club.  Two weeks before he died, he had a hole-in-one at Sleepy Hollow Country Club—his fourth in a lifetime.

He married Barbara Luntz Fragomen in 1999, after a long "courtship." Barbara had to "pass the test" by demonstrating proficiency in setting a spinnaker. Barbara and Jim loved to travel, and did many journeys through Europe, South America, and even Patagonia. He was an active supporter of Phelps Hospital.

Through marriage, he became a stepfather to her sons, Austin and Seth. He fully embraced that role: they were his only "children." He also loved being a grandfather, and an uncle and great uncle to his own large family. He loved family, he loved his many friends, he loved life. Jim was a kind, caring person, always with a hint of Irish wit.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Phelps Memorial Hospital-Northwell Health to their Physical Therapy Department for use as they see fit.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 17th at 10:00AM at the Church of St. Barnabas in Irvington, NY.
