A host of nieces and nephews also survive Herbert.
Herbert graduated from the Todd Grant High School in Darien, GA in 1958. He came to New York at age 22, and met Mercedes Cook of Harlem. They were married on October 31, 1964, and were married for 52 years.
Herbert worked for 31 years as a conductor on the F-Line of the New York City Subway, for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. He was a proud member of the Transport Workers Union.
A well-known music lover, Herbert also loved birds and the sun. He often told a story of trying to outstare the sun as a young boy. He enjoyed reading the NY Daily News and Jet magazine. He loved exploring New York City parks (it reminded him of growing up in the country). On Thursdays (his day off), he took his children to Fort Green Park in Brooklyn by day and the Whitestone Drive-in Movie Theater in the evening. Herbert loved watching the COPS television show. He loved discussing current events, and politics. He was best known as a serious man with a great sense of humor. Many of the young people in his community in Queens viewed Herbert as a father figure. He always put his wife and family first. Well loved, he had many nicknames: To family he was Sonnie or Rabbit; Uncle Herbie to his nieces and nephews; to friends, Herb; at work, Tyson; to the Wartburg staff, TyTy; and to his wife and children, Daddy.
Herbert's family will receive visitors at the Ossining Funeral Home, 45 South Highland Avenue, Ossining, NY on Thursday, March 24 from 10 AM to Noon.
