Novella Mckever
December 20, 1952 – June 3, 2024
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Helen Ruth Novella McKever, who left us on June 3, 2024. Helen was born on December 20, 1952, in Lumberton, North Carolina, to her loving parents, Emmanuel Cleo McKever Sr. and Annie Ruth Martin (deceased). Helen, a proud graduate of the New York School for the Deaf in 1972, dedicated over 35 years of her career to Westchester Community College. Her tenure was marked by exceptional dedication, and she was highly esteemed and deeply cherished by her colleagues. Helen's radiant warmth touched the hearts of all who knew her, and her life was filled with profound love and contagious laughter.
Helen, a cherished resident of Ossining, New York, for over 39 years, was a shining example of love and respect in the community. Her deep and lasting influence on those she interacted with is a testament to the profound impact she had on others. A devoted Christian, she found solace and strength in her faith. She was an active member of the Star of Bethlehem and Saint Matthews Baptist Church for many years. In more recent times, she found a spiritual home at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where she cherished meaningful moments with her best friend, the late Rosenell Ruffin.
Helen McKever was a treasure trove of stories encapsulating her essence, making it challenging to single out just one. But the prevailing memory of her is the embodiment of pure joy. When she was happy, her joy radiated to those around her, uplifting everyone in her presence. Her spirit was infectious, and her creativity and zest for life inspired those around her to live boldly and unapologetically, just as she did.
She was a remarkable warrior, exuding a unique inner strength that she harnessed to live life on her own terms. Her fiercely independent spirit was balanced by abundant love that she readily shared with others. Her presence was magnetic, drawing people in with her radiant smile, contagious laughter, and delightful sense of humor that could enliven any gathering. She effortlessly lit up the room and left a lasting, positive impact on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Despite being unable to hear, she had a deep love for music, embracing its rhythm and finding joy in dancing. Known for her playful spirit, she was a relentless prankster, delighting in sharing jokes with her loved ones. She possessed an unexplained passion for life that radiated through her every action. Despite facing various obstacles and challenges, she fearlessly and passionately pursued her goals and dreams, never allowing anything to hold her back.
Helen's memory is treasured by her beloved children, including her daughter Tracy McKever and her predeceased son Emanuel Cleo McKever III. Her adored grandchildren, Samoni and Myles McKever, also hold her memory close. Helen is also survived by her dearly loved sisters, Hazel Ann Sumner (Leroy Sumner of Lumberton NC) and Barbara Adair (Bill Adair of Greensboro, NC), and her brother, Emmanuel C. McKever II (Veronica McKever of Upper Marlboro, MD). Additionally, she is remembered by her nieces, great nephews, extended family, and a host of cherished friends, all of whom were an integral part of her life.
