Obituary

Hans Winterfeldt was born to a Jewish department store owner in Lippehne (Neumark) in 1926. He was a cook apprentice in 1940 and remained in Berlin until 1944 with illegal identity papers. Together with his family he was deported to Auschwitz. He and his parents managed to survive as laborers and were liberated in 1945. In 1948 Hans immigrated to New York where he started to work as a cook, and later became a professor of Modern Languages at Bronx Community College. He is survived by his son, Walter, and daughter-in-law Lori, his daughter Jane, son-in-law John, and grandsons John and David Tibbatts. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shoa Foundation or Leo Baeck Institute.
