E. Nicholson Stewart Jr. (Nick) spent most of his life in Westchester County, New York. Born in Bronxville, he resided in Chappaqua for several years before settling in Tarrytown in 1966, and eventually residing in Briarcliff Manor. He was the beloved son of the late Helen and Edward N. Stewart and the brother of Lawrence D. Stewart. He was predeceased by his devoted wife,Patricia.
Mr. Stewart was a graduate of the Hackley School and went on to attend Hamilton College, where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon, and the University of Virginia. He later earned his bachelor's degree from The New School for Social Research, where he also pursued graduate studies in economics. Additionally, he completed the Securities Industry Institute program at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
His professional career began as Director of Membership at the Investment Company Institute in New York. He then joined Lord, Abbett & Co. In 1974 he founded the investment management firm Trevor Stewart Burton & Jacobsen Inc., where he served at various times as President, CEO, and Chairman. He retired in 2010 and sold his interest in the firm in 2014.
Mr. Stewart was deeply involved in professional and civic organizations. He was a former member of the Investment Association of New York and the Economic Club of New York, and an Associated Professional Member of the American Society of Pension Actuaries. He was a life member of both the National Defense Industrial Association and the Naval War College Foundation in Newport, Rhode Island. He also volunteered as a driver for the Tarrytown Ambulance Corps in his early retirement.
He was an active member of the Union League Club and the Sleepy Hollow Country Club, serving as President of both. He also founded the Robert H. Tapp Foundation, Inc., and as its first President, oversaw donations for scholarships that benefitted family members of Union League Club employees, children of New York City firefighters killed in the line of duty, and recipients of the Folds of Honor program.
A man of broad interests and enduring friendships, Mr. Stewart was also a member of the Pendennis Club in Louisville for 25 years, the Colony at Mountain Lake in Lake Wales, Florida, and The 200 Club, a senior golfing group where he served on the Board of Directors.
Mr. Stewart remained connected to his alma mater, Hackley School, where he served as President of the Alumni Association and as a member of the Board of Trustees. While at Hackley, he co-founded The Hackley Review and served as its first editor—an early example of his lifelong commitment to leadership and community. He is survived by his two daughters, Pamela S. Burke (Christopher) of Croton-on-Hudson, and Wendy H. Leary (Brian) of Dobbs Ferry. He also leaves behind three cherished grandchildren: Teagan S. Burke, Braden R. Burke, and Christian N. Leary.
There will be a Celebration of his Life on Sunday July 20th from 3-5pm at the Sleepy Hollow Country Club. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to:
