Joan Glascott passed away peacefully at home in Briarcliff Manor, NY on March 6th after a brief illness. She was 97. Born July 30, 1926 to William & Helen Herder, Joan was raised in Upper Darby, PA. She graduated from Upper Darby High School and Cedar Crest College, spending summers in Ocean City, NJ with family and friends. It was there, on the Music Pier, where she and a friend caught the attention of two young men, one of whom was Jack Glascott. Upon spotting Joan, Jack quipped: “You take the blonde, I’ll take the tall, skinny one.” From then on, he told everyone that Joan Herder and Grace Kelly were the two prettiest girls he ever saw in Ocean City. Joan married Jack on February 18th, 1950, settling in Springfield, PA. Joan continued working at the Sun Oil Company. Four months later, Jack was shipped off to the Korean War with the Marines, where he received the Silver Star and Purple Heart. When he returned home, they started a family, had two sons, eventually moving to Briarcliff Manor, NY, where they welcomed their third. There, Joan was active in the community, busy volunteering at Phelps Hospital, attending the Congregational Church, and raising her three sons. The girl from Philly spent more than 65 years of her life in Briarcliff, the town she loved and always called home. Joan was elegant. Always well dressed, coiffed, never leaving the house without lipstick, right to the end. But her personality was the magnet that drew people to her. She was a wonderfully sweet person who shared her warmth and smile with everyone she met. She was a loving mother and grandmother, full of the patience, love, strength, understanding and great sense of humor required to raise 3 sons. Joan credited her mother, Helen “Babe” Herder, as her role model and inspiration, and was blessed to have her live to the age of 101. A member of Sleepy Hollow Country Club since 1970, Joan became an avid (yet often frustrated) golfer, bridge player, and, in her prime, a tennis and paddle tennis player. What she loved most about the club was the time she spent there with family and friends, treasuring the wonderful memories she made there during her 53 years as a member. When Jack retired, they spent winters in Juno Beach, FL, spending time on the beach and at Turtle Creek Country Club where Joan continued to hone her golf skills. Her tenacity paid off – Joan had a hole in one, before any of her sons did. When she was teased about hitting a driver for the 120-yard hole in one, her retort was that the hole was “slightly uphill.” In her later years, she joined the “Snappy Putters,” took painting classes, and continued to enjoy weekly dinners with her friends. Most recently, Joan lived at The Club in Briarcliff where she made new friends and kept in touch with old ones. Even in these last few years, she maintained her wonderful sense of humor and continued to be the coiffed, elegant lady she had always been. Joan was predeceased in 2006 by her beloved husband of 56 years, Jack; her parents, William and Helen Herder; her sister, Lynn Herder Walker; and her grandson, Johnny Glascott. She is survived by her sons John (Sue) of Briarcliff Manor, NY; Jeff (Linda) of Juno Beach, FL; and Jim (Deirdre) of Pound Ridge, NY, as well as nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Waterbury & Kelly Funeral Home, 1300 Pleasantville Rd in Briarcliff on Sunday, March 10th from 3:00-7:00pm. A funeral will be held on Monday, March 11th at 10:00am at the Briarcliff Congregational Church, 30 S. State Rd. in Briarcliff. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made in Joan’s name to the Briarcliff Congregational Church.
