Loretta Cecilia Sullivan Butkus

Loretta Cecilia Sullivan Butkus, 94, beloved mother, sister and grandmother passed away peacefully in her home on October 5, 2017.  Mrs. Butkus, of Waterbury, CT, was born on March 9, 1923 to the late James and Catherine Sullivan. She was united in marriage to William Samuel Butkus, who preceded her in death. Loretta grew up as the youngest of 11 children in Waterbury, CT. She attended Catholic High, followed by work at American Brass and long-term employment at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, CT.  Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.  Affectionately known as Grammy to an entire generation of children, she was an integral part of not only her grandchildren’s lives, but also that of their friends. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Dr. Catherine Small of Briarcliff Manor, NY and was preceded in death by her cherished son-in-law, Dr. Robert D. Small. She is also survived by her grandchildren Dr. Jennifer (Dr. David) Small-Saunders, Dr. Alyson (Dr. Kenneth) Small Helmandollar and William Small; and her great-grandchildren, Charles Robert Saunders and Lyla Katherine Helmandollar. Additionally, she is survived by many nieces and nephews.  The family would like to thank Jessica Mogollon for her love and dedication to Loretta.  The family would also like to thank the wonderful aids at Interim Healthcare. She will forever be remembered as a caring and generous mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and a kind and gentle soul.  The family will be receiving visitors at their home on October 8 from 3 pm-7 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Augustine’s Church in Ossining, NY on October 9 at 11 am, followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery in Waterbury, CT.  Details can be found on the Waterbury Kelly Funeral Home website www.waterburykelly.com.
